About us

Tanya Lourens, founder of the Movement Science Institute, is a Registered Biokineticist with a special interest in the retraining of movement dysfunction.  Tanya uses the latest rehabilitation techniques based on scientific based research in the field.  She believes in the active participation of patients in their retraining programs, as opposed to just being passive recipients of treatment.  Patient participation can range from control of small low threshold movements to large total body high threshold movements.  Active patient participation is the key to regain movement control and to prevent the recurrence of musculoskeletal pain.

Identifying, correcting and retraining patients’ movement faults are one of her passions.  Tanya uses both land based conditioning and hydrotherapy techniques as treatment modalities.  She believes that the management of movement dysfunction, has become one of the most important cornerstones in the practice of neuromusculoskeletal rehabilitation.

Tanya obtained her MSc (Med) Biokinetics degree at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2012. She is also a member of the South African Sports Medicine Association (SASMA), International Association of Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS), Biokinetics Association of South Africa (BASA) as well as the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).  Tanya is also an Associate of the Royal Academy of Dance (ARAD).  She started a Dance Wellness Program in 2008 at the Movement Science Institute.  She also consults and conditions dancers at numerous ballet schools in Johannesburg.

Spinal stabilization retraining

Tanya has a special interest in spinal stabilization retraining, specifically stabilization of the low back and pelvis.

Identifying, correcting and retraining patient’s movement faults in the lumbopelvic complex is the key to managing chronic and recurrent low back pain. Correcting patient’s pain provocative movements and postures forms an integral part of their retraining programs. Regaining muscular control of these spinal movements is often the key to resolving recurrent low back pain.

The development of faulty movement is often the result of habitual movements and sustained postures on a daily basis. As a result, the muscles around a joint become shortened or lengthened, affecting the muscle balance around the joint. Prolonged muscle imbalance could result in joint malalignment and incorrect joint biomechanics. Movement dysfunction is not only linked to habitual activities of daily living, but also to traumatic injuries caused by isolated events. Often prolonged underlying movement dysfunction is the cause of chronic pain and pathology and not necessarily always the result of it.

Low back pain is no longer being viewed as a structural condition requiring rest, but as a functional change that requires functional management.

Pilates

Pilates is an integrated mind-body conditioning technique developed by Joseph Pilates in the late 19th century.  It is an exercise method which predominantly focuses on strengthening the deep core stabilizers of the body, as well as to create postural awareness and proper body alignment.

The Pilates method embraces some of the stabilization principles used in spinal rehabilitation programs.  As a result, therapists believe the Pilates method is suited as a rehabilitation tool for various physical complaints and injuries.  Thus the technique has been adapted by many therapists in the field of neuromusculoskeletal rehabilitation as a therapeutic modality.

At the Movement Science Institute the Pilates method is taught in its original form, but it has also been adapted to suit the rehabilitation requirements of clients.  Selected Pilates group classes are offered as a maintenance program, following a course of spinal rehabilitation exercise sessions. These group classes are specifically designed to omit the contra-indicated exercises related to the client’s specific injuries or medical conditions.

At the Movement Science Institute the Pilates method is also used to condition athletes, dancers as well as those who would just like to improve their general strength and flexibility.
